A treasure is a wealth that transcends time, changes form and is renewed in the eyes of those who encounter it. But in great cathedrals and abbeys, the treasure consists of the relics of saints.
With this photographic exhibition, director and author Mario Pistolese guides us on a visual journey that intertwines memory, ritual and transformation. At the centre is the figure of San Gennaro: not only the patron saint of Naples, but a popular and global icon, a symbol of faith, identity and rebirth that knows no boundaries.
The images on display – mostly by Pistolese, with two works by Luciano Romano – bring the Treasury of Saint Januarius, one of the most extraordinary collections of goldsmith’s art in the world, into dialogue with its most intimate and collective dimensions: that of the miracle, the gesture, the shared gaze.
The exhibition opens with portraits of symbolic objects: the jewelled mitre, the chalices, the reliquary and the collar of honour. These sacred, sumptuous objects are kept in the Chapel of the Treasure as testimony to the centuries-old devotion of kings, nobility and the people to the saint.
But soon the gaze shifts: the treasure does not remain locked in a display case, but comes alive in faces, gestures and in the blood that melts in the most celebrated miracle in the world. Because blood is the true wealth.
Through shots of rituals, ceremonies, crowds, children in the front row and the clergy showing the ampoule, the exhibition takes us from the silence of the Chapel to the clamour of the crowd. At the centre of this choral narrative, blood becomes language, story, living participation.
From relic to relationship.
From cult to icon.
The Treasure, understood in this way, both as relics and as sumptuous gifts of gratitude, is a symbol of a deep bond, of a geography of identity that still today unites worlds and lives in the hearts of the people of the Saint.
The red thread of blood unites everything, thanks to the particular colouring at the bottom of the images, which remains imprinted like a halo, a liquid and evanescent presence: history and current events, gold and voice, the sacred and the pop, between roots and migrant memory.
In a journey that starts in Naples but speaks to the world, the exhibition is an integral part of the San Gennaro POP project: a cultural ecosystem that combines cinema, visual arts, music and new media to reinterpret a thousand-year-old figure in a contemporary key.
The exhibition is the first act of this collective narrative.
Between rituals and blood, gestures and glances.
At a time when symbols risk losing their meaning and becoming stereotypes, San Gennaro POP chooses to rediscover the authentic power of the icon, transforming it into a vision.
